Do you know what Blue Friday is? For many, Black Friday starts the Christmas shopping period with huge discounts and is one of the biggest exponents of consumerism, having started in the United States, and later spreading around the world.
In 2022, for the first time, COI-UNESCO launches “Blue Friday”, on the 25th and 26th of November, to transform a purely consumerist event into a moment of reflection dedicated to the safeguarding and recovery of our oceans, through educational initiatives.
It is estimated that 8 million pieces of plastic enter our oceans each year, due to consumerism and the bad habits of the world’s population. Blue Friday is changing the course of the world’s biggest shopping day.
Excessive consumption during these holidays ends up having a devastating impact on the environment, which is why this initiative is intended to be an opportunity to propose concrete solutions for climate change and the preservation of our oceans.
For example, in the UK alone, “Black Friday” 2020 emitted 429,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases: the weight of 61,308 elephants.
Much of this damage is caused by the production process of these products and the way they are shipped to customers. Machico, despite joining the Black Friday promotions, guarantees that both the shipping and the production process of all our shirts are done in a sustainable way.
Initiatives like this one aim to help educate consumers about the risks of our consumption habits. Currently, many companies are not concerned with their production processes, which is why consumer actions are increasingly important to change production processes and contribute to a better world.
This Black Friday, when you buy a Machico shirt, you will be contributing to a more sustainable world and to the reduction of polluting waste in our oceans.
Make our planet a better place, travel with Machico.
