The Autonomous Region of Azores is a Portuguese archipelago, consisting of nine main islands, divided into three groups:
- Western Group: Corvo and Flores.
- Central Group: Faial, Graciosa, Pico, São Jorge and Terceira.
- Eastern Group: Santa Maria and São Miguel.
As a tourist destination, it is especially geared towards nature tourism, including hiking, nautical activities, diving and whale watching. It is also very popular with sailors, who frequently dock at Marina da Horta, on the island of Faial.
What to know before traveling to the Azores:
- This is not a party destination
Despite the many events, local parties and festivals held in the Azores, this is not a party destination. In other words, if you are looking for travel madness like for example Ibiza or Algarve with lots of bars, this is not your destination.
- The weather is unpredictable
Unlike the choice of holiday destinations for paradisiacal places, where the sun and heat are always present, the Azores are not like that. Located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, the climate and weather in the Azores is quite unstable.
- There are signs of volcanic activity
Despite not showing signs of activity for centuries, there are 26 active volcanoes in the Azores, many of which are undersea.
- Bathing in the hot thermal waters is mandatory
If you like hot water, you will love to experience the fantastic sensation of a bath in the hot thermal waters present in the Azores.
- Ideal for practicing outdoor activities
In the Azores you can enjoy unique activities in an equally unique environment. For some activities it is recommended to book them in advance, to avoid inconvenience.
